Week 10 Thursday / Friday Predictions

Thursday, November 1

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech

Friday, November 2

Temple at Ohio
Akron at Bowling Green
Nevada at New Mexico St

* In the preseason, I was certain that Georgia Tech was on their way to the ACC Championship game. Now I can't imagine them winning this game, even though the Yellow Jackets have home field advantage and a bye week to prepare.

Week 9 Wrapup

My Picks:

Week 1 58-12 (82.86%)
Week 2 52-9 (85.25%)
Week 3 46-19 (70.77%)
Week 4 45-15 (75.00%)
Week 5 44-15 (74.58%)
Week 6 37-19 (66.07%)
Week 7 39-16 (70.91%)
Week 8 39-16 (70.91%)
Week 9 38-14 (73.08%)

Season 398-135 (74.67%)

-------------------------------

* Boston College and Arizona St both picked up big signature wins in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. I'm starting to think that Matt Ryan is going to win the Heisman, mainly because there just aren't many candidates that have both the statistics and wins.

* Kansas is also proving more each week that they are for real. They easily could have stumbled during either of the past two weeks with road games against Colorado and Texas A&M. Looking at the rest of their schedule, the Big 12 North could come down the last weekend of the regular season with a huge matchup against Missouri at Kansas City.

* It's hard to imagine Ohio St or Michigan losing before their final game, so that game should decide the Big Ten. Wisconsin has a chance against both of them, but they haven't lived up to their preseason expections.

* Connecticut has replaced Virginia as the most surprising team with one loss.

* Is it possible to have six teams in one division closer that they are the SEC East? One team is 6-3, two are 6-3, and three are 5-3. Georgia may be the favorite with just two home games in conference left. Tennessee does have the tiebreaker over Georgia, but has to travel to Lexington. If both of them lose, then it's anybody's game.

* Remember when Michigan St was 4-0? They've now lost four of their last five games and are 1-4 in Big Ten play.

* Troy is crushing all of its competition in the Sun Belt. They are going to be a 9-10 win team this year, depending on if Georgia is ready for them this weekend or not.

* Buffalo has won three of the last four and currently the leader of the MAC East. They and Air Force are the leaders for under-the-radar surprise team of the year.

Week 9 Thursday / Friday Predictions

Thursday, October 25

Boston College at Virginia Tech
Air Force at New Mexico

Friday, October 26

Boise St at Fresno St

* The Boston College @ Virginia Tech matchup is the game of the week. Both are undefeated in conference play, and both are coming off a bye week. Boston College is trying prove that they deserve to be in National Championship discussions as they begin the toughest part of their schedule. Virginia Tech is shooting for the ACC Championship game, and will fall behind upstart Virginia if they don't win.

Week 8 Wrapup

My Picks:

Week 1 58-12 (82.86%)
Week 2 52-9 (85.25%)
Week 3 46-19 (70.77%)
Week 4 45-15 (75.00%)

Week 6 37-19 (66.07%)
Week 7 39-16 (70.91%)
Week 8 39-16 (70.91%)

Season 360-121 (74.84%)

-------------------------------

* South Florida was the only unbeaten to lose this week, so five remain.

* Conversely, Colorado St won its first game, leaving only three winless teams.

* Louisville has lost to Syracuse and Connecticut this year. I felt like this needed to be mentioned.

* North Dakota St topped Minnesota, making them undefeated against FBS teams (2-0) and FCS teams (5-0) this season. I'd be surprised if FBS teams continue to schedule the Bison in the future.

* Central Michigan and UCLA remind me of each other, because even though both have suffered some bad losses this season, both are undefeated in conference play.

* Vanderbilt over South Carolina is just one of many surprising upsets this season, but it did make the SEC East race tough to call now. All of the teams have at least two conference losses, and only Vanderbilt has three.

* Missouri just knocked Texas Tech's Graham Harrell out of the Heisman race (1 TD, 4 INTs) with its lopsided 41-10 victory.

Season 321-105 (75.35%)

-------------------------------

* Good week if you like overtime games. Six contests needed more than 60 minutes to decide the victor.

* Both the #1 and #2 teams went down, as did Missouri, Cincinnati and Connecticut. Now only six unbeaten teams remain: Ohio St, South Florida, Boston College, Arizona St, Kansas and Hawaii.

* On the flip side of the coin, North Texas won its first game. Now only four winless teams remain: Colorado St, Marshall, Utah St and FIU.

* The Big Ten has seven teams with a 5-2 record, more than all of the other conferences combined (6).

* Speaking of the Big Ten, Indiana and Illinois came crashing back down to Earth this weekend, although in Illinois' defense, Iowa is a difficult place to win. On the other hand, Indiana just got smoked by Michigan St.

* USC continues to play teams close, much like they did last year. I expect them to lose at least one more game this season.

* Wisconsin and Texas A&M both were beat bad by teams that were generally regarded as being at the same level as them.

* Louisville is going to be one of those teams that aggravates me all season. They are capable of beating anybody, but they are also capable of losing to anybody.

South Florida at Rutgers

Friday, October 19

* Rutgers pulls off the upset special on a short week for South Florida. The BCS National Championship picture is about to get even more cloudy.

Week 7 Preview

Notes on the upcoming games this weekend:

* Missouri at Oklahoma -- Game of the Week. Oklahoma would be favored here regardless, but it doesn't help Missouri will be without their starting running back.

* LSU at Kentucky -- This is one of LSU's toughest road games this season. Which is why everyone is picking them to go undefeated.

* Illinois at Iowa -- Illinois can move to 4-0 in conference play with a good road win here.

* Texas A&M at Texas Tech -- The winner has a good chance at finishing second in the South, especially with Texas' struggles.

* Indiana at Michigan St -- I'm not sold on this Indiana team, but a solid road win against Michigan St would help their cause.

* Wisconsin at Penn St -- The Badgers need a good road win this week to get back in the good graces with the voters.

* Auburn at Arkansas -- I just can't see Arkansas falling to 0-3 in conference.

* Purdue at Michigan -- I'm not convinced that the Michigan D can withstand the aerial attack by Purdue, even in the Big House.

* TCU at Stanford -- One of the more disappointing teams plays one of the more surprising teams.

* Connecticut at Virginia -- Connecticut will become bowl-eligible with a win here. I don't think they will do it, which will kill their chances of getting into the AP or USA Today Top 25.

* Arizona at USC -- I'm guessing USC will bounce back after a bad home loss to Stanford.

* Texas at Iowa St -- Both of these teams are looking for their first Big 12 victory.

* Toledo at Buffalo -- Buffalo has a great chance to win consecutive games for the first time since 2001.

Week 7 Early Predictions

Wednesday, October 10

Navy at Pittsburgh

Thursday, October 11

Florida St at Wake Forest

Friday, October 12

Hawaii at San Jose St

Comments:

The last two times I called a revenge game (Florida over Auburn and Texas over Kansas St), I was dead wrong. Plus home teams have a big advantage over away teams on a short week. So I have to call Wake Forest over Florida St.

San Jose St has a surprisingly strong home field advantage and Hawaii has struggled for a variety of reasons this season. I'm still picking the Warriors, but I won't be that surprised if the Spartans get the upset.

Week 6 Wrapup

My Picks:

Week 1 58-12 (82.86%)
Week 2 52-9 (85.25%)
Week 3 46-19 (70.77%)
Week 4 45-15 (75.00%)
Week 5 44-15 (74.58%)
Week 6 37-19 (66.07%)

Season 282-89 (76.01%)

-------------------------------

* Just how good are Missouri and Cincinnati? Both had impressive wins this past weekend to stay unbeaten.

* Count me in the group that thinks Stanford beating USC is a bigger upset than Appalachian St beatin Michigan.

* Look, Notre Dame won a game!

* Mike Hart has put the Michigan team on his back and has led them to four straight wins. If he keeps this up, he should become one of the top Heisman candidates.

* Isn't it a sign of the apocalypse if Temple and Buffalo win on the same day?

* With losses by Wisconsin, USC, Purdue and Kentucky, now there are only 11 undefeated teams. The lowest ranked one is Connecticut at 22.

* The number of winless teams was cut in half this past weekend, as five of them won for the first time. The winners were Rice, Notre Dame, Temple, Louisiana Lafayette and Louisiana Monroe. Still winless are Marshall, Colorado St, FIU, North Texas and Utah St.

* North Carolina, Memphis and San Diego St won their first game over a FBS team. Now only five teams have only beaten an FCS team: NC State, UAB, Tulane, Idaho and Louisiana Tech.

Week 6 Top 25

The top two spots remain the same, but there's a lot of shake up after them. South Florida moves up 10 spots after beating West Virginia, the biggest gain of the week. The biggest fall was by Rutgers, previously 14, who fell out of the poll after losing to Maryland. The Scarlet Knights should move back into the poll if they can beat Cincinnati this week.

Week 2 52-9 (85.25%)
Week 3 46-19 (70.77%)
Week 4 45-15 (75.00%)
Week 5 44-15 (74.58%)

Season 245-70 (77.78%)

-------------------------------

* Huge weekend for teams at the top. Eight previously unbeaten teams suffered their first loss and therefore a major blow to each's National Championship hopes. Now there are only 15 lossless teams remain.

* USC only beat Washington by a field goal, so the Trojans were in serious danger of falling from thier lofty perch.

* On the flip side of the coin, MTSU won this past weekend so now there are only 10 winless teams: Marshall, Rice, Notre Dame, Temple, Colorado St, Louisiana Lafayette, FIU, North Texas, Louisiana Monroe and Utah St.

* Five team won their first game against an FBS member this past weekend: Army, Western Michigan, Arizona, Fresno St and Nevada. That leaves only eight teams whose only wins are over FCS members: NC State, North Carolina, Memphis, UAB, Tulane, San Diego St, Idaho and Louisiana Tech.

* For the first week this season, no FCS team beat an FBS team.
